On this day, I learned 'newscrapping' collection processes. Newspaper scrapbooks are another essential component to Neutinamu Library services. In addition to newspaper subscriptions with Korea's top print newspapers, Newspaper scrapbooks are a specialized collection of carefully selected newspaper clippings on several topics; a consensus of what interests the patrons as well as topics that are relevant to daily life. Each week, the scrapping clubs which consists of patrons of the library include both adult and teen volunteers known as 'newscrappers.' The newspaper scrapper's read through several print newspapers that vary in perspective and clip articles that fit into the categories listed below. Name of newspaper, issue/volume, article title, date of curation, keywords, and a brief synopsis of conversation topics that occurred with other volunteers while curating articles. Lastly, a link to the article is added the libraries website for further reference. The activity sparks conversation among volunteers and end-users. This type of curation of special collections embodies another form of information sharing.

With the help of the volunteer translator, Mr. Cho and I read through several newspapers. I then chose one article I thought would fit into the categories. In this particular article, it highlights the screening of the Korean film 1987: When the Day Comes (2017) based on a true story in 1987 of social unrest in the name of a controversial death and cover-up of a college student by Korean police. Pictured in the article above, is the current South Korean President Moon Jae-in, his wife, and the mother of the college student who died under police interrogation. The historical event resonates deep in the hearts of many Koreans regarding social injustice.

On this day, I contributed to the Newspaper Scrapbooks by translating topics into English and designing spine labels for all scrapbooks that include both name of topics written in both Korean and English.

This activity helped me become more familiar with the different themes as well as increase my Korean vocabulary.

In addition to sprucing up the newspaper scrapbooks, I was tasked to pick articles from online newspapers outside of Korea covering reports on the #MeToo movement.
